How to Install an Alternator in a Toyota Diesel Pickup

How to Install an Alternator in a Toyota Diesel Pickup

The alternator in a Toyota diesel pickup is a power generator that powers all the electrical components in the truck. When the alternator dies, the battery won't charge, and the electrical components will start draining the battery down until it, too, finally dies. After you've removed the old alternator, you must know how to properly install the new one.

Difficulty:
Moderately Challenging

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • New alternator
  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
    • 1

Align the mounting holes on the alternator with the mounting bracket on the front of the truck for the alternator. On many Toyota diesels, it is located over the passenger side wheel well in the engine bay. Make sure that the alternator is oriented so that the electrical plug terminal is facing away from the engine and on the lower half of the alternator.

    • 2

Thread the mounting bolts into the alternator and tighten them to secure it to the mounting brackets.

    • 3

Plug the electrical connector into plug terminal on the side of the alternator.

    • 4

Slide the serpentine belt over the alternator pulley so that the teeth on the belt sit in the grooves on the pulley and the belt is centered on the pulley.
