How to change the rear brake pads on a Toyota Corolla

The rear brakes is important in helping to stop a car. While, of course the front brakes do most of the work, the rear brakes does have some effect in slowing down the car. Just follow the steps below to change out your rear brakes and have them in good working order.

Difficulty:
Moderate

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the tire and remove the brake drum.

    • 2

Spray everything down with brake cleaner.

    • 3

After everything has dried, take your brake spring tool and put it on the washers of the left brake shoe. Give it a quarter of a turn. The washers and springs should come off.

    • 4

Do the same thing on the right brake shoe. Use brake pliers to unhook the spring that's on the top of the brake shoes.

    • 5

Pull the right brake shoe away from the drum and downward. There's a spring at the bottom of the brake shoes. Unhook the spring from the right brake shoe and put the right brake shoe down.

    • 6

Pull the left brake shoe out slightly. There's a small spring in the center of the brake shoe, remove it with pliers. The shoe should be able to be pulled back further.

    • 7

Remove the spring that is attached to the brake adjuster mechanism. The brake adjuster has two pieces. Pull one with the wheel off.

    • 8

Remove the other piece. Remove it by pulling the arm off and it should come right off.

    • 9

Remove the horse shoe clip that attaches the emergency brake and left brake shoe together. Remove by using a screwdriver. The brake shoe should come right off after removing the horse shoe clip.

    • 10

Get the new left brake shoe and place it in place with the emergency brake. Place the washer on top of the brake and install the horse shoe clip. Use pliers to squeeze the ends together.

    • 11

Pt the end of the brake adjuster back on the assembly. Now take the tiny spring we removed earlier and slide one end into the hole on the emergency brake.

    • 12

Put the brake shoe up in its original position. Slide the other end of the spring into the hole on the brake shoe.

    • 13

Put the pin in the center of the brake shoe and put the washer facing up, place the spring on, and put the other washer facing down. Use the brake spring tool and give a quarter turn and the brake should stay in place.

    • 14

Turn the star wheel on the brake adjuster so the adjuster gets shorter. Now insert the star portion of the adjuster to the left side of the brake assembly. Install the spring into the hole of the left brake shoe on top of the brake shoe. Install the bottom spring as well.

    • 15

Insert the other end of the bottom spring into right brake shoe. Put the brake in position and put the pin in the center of the brake. Put the bottom washer facing up, insert the spring, and put the top washer facing down. Use the brake spring tool to give it a quarter turn. The right brake should now stay.

    • 16

The right end of the brake adjuster should now be touching the right brake pad. Use a pliers to stretch the other end of the top spring to hook onto the right brake shoe.

    • 17

Install the brake drum. Go to the back and turn the adjuster wheel upwards with a screwdriver until you feel a slight drag when you turn the brake drum. Put your tire back on and you are done.
