Changing your oil at home can save money and time.

When it comes to routine oil changes, taking your Toyota Camry to the service center can be costly. Changing the oil every three months or every 3,000 miles will keep your Camry from running on oil that has been broken down by the engine. When changing your car's oil, it is also good to change the oil filter due the amount of metal and sediment it has collected. Save time and money by changing your Camry's oil and filter at home.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Ratchet set
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Oil filter
  • 5 quarts of oil
  • Plastic container
  • Rag
    • 1

Place the plastic receptacle beneath the oil pan, which is located below the motor. Remove the oil-drain plug with a ratchet and allow the excess oil to drain into the pan. Screw the oil-drain plug back into the oil pan.

    • 2

Remove the oil filter with an oil wrench, allowing the excess oil to drain into the plastic receptacle. The oil filter is located beneath the engine manifold. Rub a thin coating of oil on the new oil filter's gasket and screw it into the oil filter housing. The extra oil on the filter's gasket will make it easier to remove next time.

    • 3

Open the hood and locate the oil filler cap which is located on top of the engine block. Remove it with your fingers and pour 3 quarts of oil into the motor. Locate the engine dipstick and pull it free, wiping it with a rag. Reinsert the dipstick and pull it out again, measuring the oil level.

    • 4

Pour oil into the motor at 1/2-quart increments until the dipstick shows that it is full.

    • 5

Turn on the Camry and allow it to run for five minutes. Turn it off and check the oil level once again, topping off as needed.
