The blower motor works in conjunction with the heater core to provider heat to the cabin of your Toyota truck. Coolant heated by the engine flows through the heater core. The blower motor draw fresh air from outside the vehicle, across the heated core. The heated air is then directed through ducts to either the floor, dash vents or defrosting vents.

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Metric wrench set
  • Metric socket set
  • Needlenose pliers
  • Antifreeze
  • Replacement blower motor
  • Waste oil collection pan
  1. Removing the Heater Unit

    • 1

      Disconnect the ground cable from the negative battery terminal by loosening the clamp and pulling the cable off the negative battery post.

      Drain the cooling system by opening the petcock valve on the lower corner of the radiator and allowing the coolant to drain into a waste oil collection pan.

      Disconnect the heater hoses on the left side of the firewall in the engine bay. Loosen the hose clamps and pull the hoses off the inlet tubes. Label each hose for easy reinstallation.

      Remove the glove box assembly by removing the screws that secure it to the dash.

      Separate the ductwork from the heater case by pulling it off the case.

      Disconnect the heater cables by lifting the spring clips and separating the cables. Be careful not to crimp or damage the cables. Label the cables for reassembly.

      Separate the electrical connections by pulling apart the plastic connector.

    • 8

      Remove the three or four bolts that secure the heater case to the dash.

      Pull the case toward the rear of the vehicle to disengage the inlet tubes from the firewall. Then slide the case downward to remove it from the dash.

    Replacing the Blower Motor

      Remove the three bolts that secure the fan assembly on the bottom of the case.

    • 2

      Remove the fan assembly from the case.

    • 3

      Remove the nut that secures the fan blades to the blower motor. Remove the fan blades.

    • 4

      Position the fan blades on the shaft of the new motor, and install the nut that secures them.

    • 5

      Slide the new blower motor into position in the heater case and reinstall the three bolts that secure it.

    Reinstalling the Heater Case

    • 1

      Slide the heater case up underneath the dash and push it forward to engage the inlet tubes in the firewall. Install the three or four bolts that secure the heater case to the dash.

      Reconnect the heater cables, following the labels you made previously.

      Reconnect the plastic electrical connector.

    • 4

      Reconnect the ductwork to the heater case.

    • 5

      Lift the glove box into position and reinstall the screws that secure it.

    • 6

      Reconnect the heater hoses on the left side of the firewall in the engine bay. Tighten the hose clamps.

    • 7

      Fill the cooling system with fresh coolant.

    • 8

      Reconnect the ground cable to the negative battery terminal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful not to damage the foam seals while separating the ductwork from the case.

  • Pets are attracted to the smell of automotive antifreeze, which is poisonous if ingested. Keep pets and small children away from antifreeze.
