How to Adjust the Timing in a Toyota Tundra

Adjusting the timing on a Toyota Tundra to advance the timing for horsepower gains or to install aftermarket performance parts is common. Hoever, changing the timing on a Toyota Tundra is a complicated project requiring special tools and a clear understanding of engine mechanics.

  • Reprogramming software
  • Interface connection device

      Load the reprogramming software provided by the parts manufacturer onto the computer. Connect the interface connection device to the computer and the to the OBD II connector under the steering wheel. Turn the ignition to the "On" position without starting the Toyota Tundra engine and shut off any accessories such as climate control, the radio and lights.

      Turn the interface connection device on and wait for the automatic connection confirmation message. Run the computer software and enter the data requested including engine number and vehicle identification number or VIN. The VIN is at the bottom of the windshield on the driver's side. The engine identification number is located on the driver's door information sticker.

      Select the software version to upload and make any changes or adjustments desired. Start the data transfer and verify the progress bar appears on the computer screen.

      Wait until the "Data transfer completed" screen appears and turn the key to the "Off" position. Remove the computer interface device from the OBD II connector and start the engine. Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature before driving.
